It’s 6:30 a.m. on a rainy Saturday morning here in Port of Spain.

The rain has settled in, the dogs are asleep, and after watching them earlier this week conduct what appeared to be a full-scale search operation through the living room, I think they’ve earned the rest.

I’m working through my second espresso.

I haven’t posted as much over the past week as I normally would. Business has been unusually busy, sleep has been in short supply, and something had to give. Hopefully over the coming week the schedule eases enough to get back into a more regular rhythm.

In many ways, that mirrors the market itself this week.

There wasn’t one defining headline.

Instead, there were dozens of smaller stories pulling capital in different directions simultaneously.

The market wasn’t weak.

It was selective.

The S&P 500 finished the week comfortably higher while the Nasdaq also advanced, but underneath the surface the picture was considerably more complicated.

Small caps continued to struggle, with the Russell 2000 lagging noticeably behind the large-cap indices.

Europe spent much of the week under pressure before stabilizing into Friday, while Asia remained a tale of multiple markets. Japan continued showing resilience, Hong Kong strengthened nicely, Australia quietly ground higher, while mainland China remained the weakest major market.

That divergence is becoming one of the defining themes of 2026.

Not every market is participating equally.

Iron Bank saw it before the indexes did

One reason I enjoy building Iron Bank is that it forces me to look beneath price.

This week’s readings were particularly interesting.

• Iron remained Elevated.

• Anchor stayed Stable.

• North Star remained Strong with participation holding above 60%.

That combination is important.

It suggests the market structure itself hasn’t broken.

Instead, capital continues rotating aggressively beneath the surface.

LOKI captured exactly that behavior.

• Correlation weakened.

• Dispersion increased.

• Leadership narrowed.

• Rotation accelerated.

That’s not what market tops normally look like.

It’s what investors experience when money leaves one group of winners and immediately searches for another.

Defensive leadership isn’t necessarily bearish

Perhaps the biggest surprise this week came from Atlas.

• Healthcare.

• Utilities.

• Consumer Staples.

• Materials.

• Defense.

• Financials.

Those sectors dominated leadership rankings.

Meanwhile Technology and Semiconductors slipped into the weakest categories inside the model.

That immediately raises eyebrows. Normally investors associate defensive leadership with fear.

Sometimes that’s true. Sometimes it’s simply investors becoming more selective after enormous gains elsewhere.

The key distinction is this:

Iron Bank continues describing this as rotation, not structural deterioration and that is an important difference.

Meanwhile, the bond market remained calm

• Treasury futures were remarkably stable considering everything else happening globally.

• Gold quietly pushed back above $4,100.

• Silver continues its consolidation.

• Oil drifted lower into the weekend despite another turbulent week in the Middle East.

• Natural gas remained volatile.

Taken together, those moves don’t suggest panic.

They suggest markets are continually repricing geopolitical risk without assuming the worst-case outcome.

The Middle East refuses to stay quiet

Unfortunately, that worst-case scenario never completely disappears.

The fragile understanding between Washington and Tehran deteriorated again this week after renewed attacks around the Strait of Hormuz prompted another round of U.S. military strikes against Iranian targets. Oil sanctions were tightened again, while both sides continued exchanging increasingly aggressive rhetoric.

Then, just as quickly, diplomacy reappeared.

By Friday, discussions shifted back toward indirect negotiations through Gulf mediators, even as President Trump declared the earlier ceasefire framework effectively over while confirming that talks would continue.

If there’s one lesson markets continue teaching us, it’s this:

Geopolitics rarely moves in straight lines.

Neither do oil prices.

Corporate America kept moving

Away from geopolitics, several corporate stories stood out.

SK Hynix completed one of the largest foreign listings ever seen in U.S. markets, with exceptionally strong demand and an impressive first day of trading. It highlights that global appetite for AI infrastructure remains very much alive despite periodic volatility in semiconductor shares.

Boeing also quietly delivered one of the week’s more important industrial developments.

The company officially opened its new North Line production facility in Everett as part of its long recovery following years of manufacturing setbacks. Production won’t ramp overnight, but it represents another incremental step toward rebuilding one of America’s most important industrial manufacturers.

Meanwhile, attention continues building around SpaceX.

Investors are already looking beyond the IPO itself toward upcoming insider lock-up dates that could influence supply later this year, while bipartisan congressional purchases of SpaceX shares added another interesting dimension to the investment story.

None of these developments dominate a single trading session.

Collectively, however, they continue reinforcing the broader themes of AI infrastructure, aerospace manufacturing, and long-duration industrial investment.

Looking ahead

Next week probably won’t become easier.

Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh heads to Capitol Hill for semiannual testimony before Congress, with investors looking for any shift in the Fed’s inflation or interest-rate outlook.

At the same time, earnings season begins gathering momentum.

That’s when narratives stop driving prices. Results do.

Final thoughts

This week reinforced something I’ve written repeatedly over the past several months.

The market isn’t giving investors an easy “risk-on” or “risk-off” answer. It’s demanding selectivity. Capital is moving. Leadership is changing. Geopolitical risk remains elevated.

Yet beneath all of that, the broader market structure continues holding together better than many expected. Sometimes the headlines tell you where the market has been. The rotation tells you where it’s trying to go.

In other words, this isn’t a market that’s broken, nor is it one firing on all cylinders. It’s a market still climbing while working against macro headwinds.

The IRON reading remains elevated, reflecting continued pressure from higher interest rates and a strong U.S. dollar. Neither has eased enough to remove the friction that’s been building beneath the surface over recent months.

At the same time, ANCHOR remains stable. Credit markets continue functioning normally, liquidity remains intact, and there are still no signs that systemic stress is spreading through financial markets. Elevated pressure is something to respect, but it hasn’t become instability.

Participation also remains encouraging. North Star shows 102 of 167 assets aligned, or just over 61% of the market. That’s consistent with a market that’s still trending higher, even if leadership has narrowed.

That narrowing is exactly what LOKI continues to detect.

LOKI remains in Rotation with moderate severity. Correlations remain low while dispersion stays elevated, indicating capital is moving between sectors rather than exiting equities altogether.

That’s an important distinction.

Rotation creates new leaders.

Liquidation creates broad losers.

Iron Bank says we’re still in the first environment.

The biggest surprise this morning is where that leadership actually sits.

According to ATLAS, leadership remains concentrated in Healthcare, Utilities, Consumer Staples, Materials, Defense, and Financials. These are sectors that continue attracting institutional capital despite the higher index futures.

Meanwhile, Technology and Semiconductors remain classified as Breaking. That doesn’t necessarily mean they cannot rally today after the long weekend. It means the broader participation required to restore durable leadership has not yet appeared.

The more important question is whether today’s buying broadens participation across the market or simply rotates money into another group of stocks.

For now, Iron Bank continues to describe a market that remains healthy enough to participate in, but selective enough that where you invest still matters more than simply being invested.

It’s just after 5:00 a.m. in Port of Spain, and the courtyard is unusually cool this morning. Coffee number one is doing its job while the dogs are somewhere out in the yard conducting their daily investigation. No barking yet, which usually means they’ve found something worth examining. While they worked their beat, I ran through the portfolio numbers. With the first half of the year now behind us, it seemed like a good time to step back from the day-to-day market noise and see exactly where the portfolio stands relative to the major indexes.

I pulled the IBKR performance report this morning, and the account is currently up +19.09% year to date on a time-weighted return basis.

That matters because TWR is the cleaner comparison number. It adjusts for deposits and withdrawals, which makes it a better way to compare the portfolio against major indexes.

Here is where things stand:

The account is still ahead of the S&P 500, Nasdaq, Dow, and Mid Caps. The only major benchmark currently ahead is the Russell 2000, which is actually a fair comparison because this portfolio has behaved much more like a high-beta small/mid-cap growth and rotation account than a plain index portfolio.

The honest read is this:

The year is still strong, but the last few weeks changed the shape of the performance.

Before the June pullback, the account had been well above +30% YTD. By the end of June, that had already cooled to roughly +21.7%. After the semi, memory, and ARM-related volatility, the account is now closer to +19.1%.

That is not a broken portfolio.

That is a portfolio that stopped running laps around the market for a few days and is now breathing like a normal human instead of a caffeinated greyhound.

At the sector level, the account is still built around a barbell: broad dividend exposure and short-duration Treasury exposure on one side, with technology, industrials, energy, financials, and healthcare on the other.

The main drag recently has come from the higher-volatility growth sleeve, especially semiconductors and memory. The stabilizer has been the structure around SCHD, SGOV, defensives, financials, and industrials.

So the conclusion is simple:

The account is no longer in runaway outperformance mode.

But it is still ahead of most major indexes, still structured, and still very much in the game.

Coffee number two is now in hand. It’s 6:15 AM. The dogs have completed their morning reconnaissance and are now passed out on the couch.

I haven’t even made it through the overnight news yet because the first thing that caught my eye wasn’t a headline—it was USD/JPY at 162.7.

Overnight, Venezuela was rocked by two powerful earthquakes just minutes apart, reported at 7.1 and 7.5 magnitude, with early reports pointing to extensive damage across parts of the country.

Micron absolutely demolished earnings and raised guidance, putting the AI trade firmly back in the driver’s seat. Nasdaq futures are surging as investors pile back into semiconductors before the opening bell.

Ukraine continues its campaign against Russian energy infrastructure, with additional refinery and fuel depot strikes overnight. Several facilities are now expected to remain offline for months, and in some cases well into 2027, tightening long-term refining capacity.

Despite the ceasefire framework, military aircraft remain highly active around the Strait of Hormuz while commercial shipping continues to recover. Vessel traffic has more than doubled from yesterday as confidence slowly returns, although the situation remains fluid.

Imagine six players sitting around a Risk board. Five of them are still competing for victory. One of them is not.

That player has been pushed back to a single region. His supply lines are gone. His ability to project power is limited. He no longer has enough territory to dictate terms or shape the direction of the game.

On paper, he is losing.

But something changes when a player reaches that stage.

The objective is no longer to win.

The objective becomes survival.

Every turn, he launches attacks into neighboring territories. Not because he expects to conquer the board, but because he wants to raise the cost of eliminating him. He builds armies on his final territory while continuously inflicting damage on anyone within reach.

The calculation is simple.

If taking his last territory costs an opponent twenty armies, nobody wants to be the one to do it. The player who delivers the Coup de grâce may collect the cards, but he also weakens himself enough that another rival can immediately take advantage.

The result is a strange form of deterrence.

The weaker player survives not because he is strong enough to win, but because he is dangerous enough to punish whoever attacks him.

Iran increasingly resembles that player.

Closing shipping lanes. Supporting proxy groups. Launching limited retaliatory strikes. Creating uncertainty in energy markets. None of these actions change the balance of power. But they do increase the cost of pressure.

The Strait of Hormuz closure is not a path to victory. It is a tax on whoever applies pressure next. The proxy network is not an empire. It is a set of trip wires designed to raise the cost of any direct confrontation. The missile and drone campaigns are not conquests. They are signals that elimination will not come cheaply.

Much of the commentary surrounding Iran assumes that every action is part of a strategy designed to achieve dominance. But what if the objective has already changed?

ATLAS Weekly Sector Report: The Broadening Beneath the Surface

One of the biggest mistakes investors can make is focusing on a single stock while missing what the rest of the market is doing.

Looking at Thursday’s close, the message from ATLAS was clear.

This is no longer a market where participation is concentrated in a handful of names.

The breadth underneath the surface continues to expand.

Semiconductors remain the strongest area of the market, but what stood out wasn’t Nvidia. It was the sheer number of companies participating. At Thursday’s close, Micron was higher by roughly 10%, Intel gained 11%, DRAM advanced 12%, while Marvell, TSMC, Qualcomm, Vertiv, GlobalFoundries, AMD, ARM, and Broadcom all finished higher as well.

The strength spans memory, foundries, networking, AI infrastructure, data center power, and communications equipment. Leadership remains firmly intact.

Industrials delivered a similarly constructive message. Eaton, Emerson, Honeywell, Caterpillar, Deere, GE Vernova, and Johnson Controls all participated. Capital spending remains one of the market’s strongest themes, and industrial leadership continues to confirm that view.

Financials were another area worth noting. Traditional banks participated, but so did brokers and fintech companies. Robinhood, SoFi, Interactive Brokers, and Block all showed strength alongside the banking sector. Japanese financial institutions remain particularly strong, while European banks continue to trend positively.

Consumer discretionary was perhaps the biggest surprise.

Retail names including RH, Wayfair, Urban Outfitters, and Kohl’s all closed higher. Travel stocks such as Royal Caribbean, Delta, United Airlines, American Airlines, and JetBlue participated as well. Housing-related names including Home Depot, D.R. Horton, and Builders FirstSource also finished strong.

Collectively, those groups represent areas investors typically favor when they expect continued economic activity rather than recession.

Beyond the primary leadership groups, cybersecurity remained healthy with Palo Alto Networks, CrowdStrike, Zscaler, and Varonis all holding firm. Communications and media stocks continued to attract capital, while e-commerce names maintained positive participation.

One of the more interesting developments came from real estate.

Earlier this year, REITs were consistently among the weakest groups in the market. That picture has begun to change. VNQ, REET, Brookfield Infrastructure, and Brookfield Renewable all showed signs of stabilization. The sector is no longer deteriorating and appears to be finding support.

Not every area of the market is participating equally.

Healthcare remains the weakest major sector. Managed care providers continue to struggle, and despite improving conditions in certain biotech names, the broader group remains under pressure. Consumer staples also continue to lag as investors favor more economically sensitive sectors.

The international picture remains constructive.

European markets continue to participate. Emerging markets remain healthy. Vietnam continues to perform well, while Japan stands out as one of the strongest regions globally, led by strength across its banking sector.

Taken together, the evidence points toward a market that is broadening rather than narrowing.

A few months ago, AI was carrying much of the market on its shoulders. Today, semiconductors remain strong, but they are no longer alone. Industrials are participating. Financials are participating. Consumer discretionary is participating. Housing is participating. Travel is participating. Real estate is stabilizing. International markets are contributing.

That is a healthier backdrop than the narrow leadership that defined much of the first quarter.

Markets are waking up to a very different tone than the one investors saw yesterday afternoon.

The Federal Reserve left interest rates unchanged, which was widely expected. What caught investors’ attention was the Fed’s signal that multiple rate hikes could still be on the table during the second half of the year if inflation proves stubborn. Markets initially sold off on the news as traders adjusted expectations for the path of policy.

This morning, however, futures are pointing higher. S&P futures are up nearly 1%, Nasdaq futures are leading the rebound, and Treasury yields remain elevated with the 10-year Treasury sitting around 4.46%.
